First Tattoo? Here’s Everything You Need to Know

Your welcoming guide from Black Gold Tattoo Co in South Edmonton

Thinking about getting your first tattoo? That’s a big moment—and we’re honoured you’re considering sharing it with us. At Black Gold Tattoo Co, we know how exciting (and sometimes nerve-wracking) that first step can be. Whether you’ve been planning it forever or just got inspired, we’re here to guide you through the process with experience, care, and creativity.

We’re a professional, welcoming tattoo shop located in South Edmonton off Parsons and Ellerslie at 2951 Ellwood Drive SW #104, just minutes from South Common. We offer both custom tattoos and walk-in services, making it easy to find your perfect piece—on your schedule.

✏️ Step 1: Think About Your Tattoo

Before you book or walk in, consider a few basics:

  • Size – Do you want something subtle or something that makes a statement?
  • Placement – Think about visibility, sensitivity, and how it fits your style.
  • Style – Are you drawn to realism, floral, geometric, pop culture, fine line, Japanese, or illustrative designs?

Still unsure? No stress. We’re happy to chat through ideas and help shape your vision.

🎨 Step 2: Find the Right Artist for You

At Black Gold Tattoo Co, we have a diverse team of skilled artists—each with their own style, strengths, and vibe. Here’s a quick intro to help you find your perfect match:

  • Kevin – Specialises in illustrativerealism, and cover-up tattoos. Great for detailed, expressive pieces and turning the old into something bold.
  • Brian – Focuses on realism and Japanese-style tattoos, bringing traditional elements to life with depth and flow.
  • Alex – Known for clean, bold geometric tattoos—perfect if you’re into symmetry, balance, and modern aesthetic.
  • Chris L – Loves all things illustrative and pop culture. Ideal for fans of comics, movies, and iconic characters.
  • Ian – Specialises in fine line and illustrative work with a soft, delicate feel and eye for detail.
  • Jackson – Delivers stunning black and grey realism, creating depth and mood with refined precision.
  • Jess – Expert in floral and illustrative tattoos—beautiful, flowy, and full of personality.
  • Steve – Master of realism and portrait tattoos. Perfect for lifelike designs and meaningful tributes.

If you’re not sure who to book with, don’t worry—just reach out and we’ll help match you with the artist who best fits your idea and energy.

📅 Step 3: Custom Appointments or Walk-In? You Choose

We offer both:

  • Custom appointments for pieces that need a bit more planning and collaboration
  • Walk-in services for when the inspiration strikes and you’re ready to go

A quick consultation is the best way to get comfortable, chat with your artist, and sort out the details (including design, placement, timing, and pricing).

🛠️ Step 4: What to Expect on Tattoo Day

Here’s how to prep:

  • Eat beforehand—low blood sugar and tattoos don’t mix.
  • Stay hydrated and avoid anything that thins your blood (alcohol, certain meds).
  • Wear comfy clothes that give your artist easy access to the area.
  • Bring valid ID—you must be 18+.

During the session:

  • You’ll review and approve the stencil before anything begins.
  • Your artist will walk you through every step and check in as they work.
  • You can bring snacks, music, or even a support buddy (depending on the session length and shop vibe).

🧴 Step 5: Take Care of Your New Ink

After your session, your artist will go over aftercare in detail. Generally, you’ll want to:

  • Keep the area clean with gentle soap
  • Use fragrance-free lotion to stay moisturised
  • Avoid soaking, scratching, or too much sun exposure while it heals

Proper care means better healing and a crisp, lasting tattoo.

👋 Ready to Get Started?

Your first tattoo should be something you love and a moment you remember—and at Black Gold Tattoo Co, we’re here to make that happen. Whether it’s a tiny symbol or a full sleeve, we’ll guide you from idea to aftercare with skill and respect.
